About our fitted home offices in St John's Wood

Working from home is easier when the desk, shelves and storage are built for the job. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, planned around how you work. For a home in St John's Wood, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. Most enquiries start with glare from a window on the screen and no proper place to work from home, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a flat, a desk built into a wall of bedroom storage uses space well, with drawers beneath and shelving over it. Since most households around St John's Wood live in purpose-built flats, one run of furniture doing two jobs can make sense. We plan where cables run and leave new wiring to your electrician.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

What we don’t do

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Turning an unconverted loft into a room
  • Structural work, such as removing walls or chimney breasts
  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out

Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Fitted home offices in St John's Wood: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around St John's Wood were built before 1919 (about 30%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of St John's Wood, Historic England’s list includes Nuffield Lodge (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south-east, and Devonshire Lodge (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

Close to Primrose Hill? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. Living in a block of flats near South Hampstead station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Winfield House, about 0.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Shelves full of books and files carry real weight. We use birch plywood for shelves that carry a load. Long spans need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.

Shelves

We can make fixed shelves, adjustable ones, or a mix. Fixed shelves help tall units stay rigid, and adjustable shelves leave room to change.

How we price fitted home offices

The price for your room depends on:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How big the furniture is
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Helping us understand the room

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

To make a start, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Let us know about parking at the measuring visit
  • Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day
  • Measure your chair and how much room you need behind it
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the furniture clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The desk edge is touched most, so give it a wipe now and then.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a door drops or a drawer catches, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us.

Questions from St John's Wood

I live in a flat in St John's Wood. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Home offices are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in St John's Wood?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London, and St John's Wood is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

How much does a fitted home office cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. It depends on how much furniture you want, the layout and the finish. For a quote, use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How fitting works for fitted home offices

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so it’s worth checking with the managing agent in advance. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.

  1. It starts when you contact us about a home office. A line on how you work helps too.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the room, the window and your equipment, and plan where the cables will run.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your office furniture is made at our workshop, sized for the room.
  5. The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
