Loft storage for homes in Chelsea

We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. The conversion itself is not our work, and conversions come under Building Regulations. Once the room is finished, we can design storage to suit it. If you have a converted loft in Chelsea, the design visit is the first step. If your home has a loft room that still feels unfinished and clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom, eaves cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Chelsea, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the eaves cupboard we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Fitted storage in Chelsea

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Chelsea were built before 1919 (about 68%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 13%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 337 entries within half a mile of the centre of Chelsea. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and eaves cupboards can be designed to work around them. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Chelsea is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If your home is one of the older houses near Former Welsh Congregational Church, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. Carlyle's House, about 0.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

Chelsea is in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, about 2 miles north-west of Kensington. We can visit homes in Chelsea on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. In Kensington and Chelsea, Chelsea is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 13 places on our list.

Every address in SW3, SW10, SW1X and SW1W is covered for loft storage, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Streets in the area include Markham Square, Wellington Square and Tedworth Square, and we cover homes on all of them for loft storage. Main roads around Chelsea include the B302 and B304, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. We also cover Brompton (1 mile north), South Kensington (1 mile west), Little Chelsea (1 mile south-west), Belgravia (1 mile north-east) and World's End (1 mile south-west). We also make loft storage in nearby places such as Kensington (2 miles north-west), Notting Hill (2 miles north-west), Notting Dale (3 miles north-west), Holland Park (2 miles north-west), Bayswater (2 miles north-west) and Kensal Town (3 miles north-west).

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

In a loft room, walls and floors are seldom square. Standard furniture leaves visible gaps. We scribe our storage to the slopes and walls, and set it level. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Insulation or ventilation work behind the eaves
  • Building Regulations approval for a conversion
  • Any work on the structure of the house

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Eaves doors and drawers

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

The problems loft storage solve

Loft rooms that double as offices or guest rooms need places for things. Built-in storage under the slopes keeps the room flexible.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • Furniture that cannot get up to the loft
  • A converted loft with no fitted furniture
  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope

If you live near Burton’s Court, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

How fitting works for loft storage

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Common questions about loft storage

Do you make loft storage for homes in Chelsea?

Yes, we work across Kensington and Chelsea, Chelsea included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

My home in Chelsea is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How long will the loft storage fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The storage is made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We work tidily and keep the stairs and landing as clear as we can.

Can you convert my loft as well?

No, we build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. Once your loft is converted, we can design the storage.

Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the space. We plan it at the design visit.

What do eaves cupboards cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The size of the room, the amount of storage and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll arrange a design visit.
