Loft storage for your home in Notting Dale

Loft storage in Notting Dale

The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Eaves cupboards and pull-out drawers built into the knee wall put it to work. Drawers bring the back of the space within reach. At the design visit in Notting Dale, we will see what fits. If you’re living with a new loft conversion that needs storage and boxes piled on loft boards, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Notting Dale, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and older houses have plenty of odd corners: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. That’s where fitted storage comes in, made to follow walls that are seldom true.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Common questions about loft storage

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Notting Dale?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

My home in Notting Dale is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

Our loft storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

What do eaves cupboards cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Loft storage in Notting Dale: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 58% of the housing in the streets around Notting Dale, with about 15% built between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Notting Dale is in the Ladbroke Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. More than half of the homes in the area around Notting Dale (about 58%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many older terraces have had loft conversions, leaving eaves spaces and slopes that suit fitted storage.

The wider area includes historic houses like Sambourne House, about 1.1 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even. For a flat near Shepherds Bush station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near Thomas Jones Primary School, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall and ceiling. They help the storage look as though it was always there. The plinth does the same job at the floor.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It goes into the carcasses, the drawers and the shelves. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store, including the eaves and any dormer.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft, as everything has to get up there.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. It is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How we price loft storage

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The width and height of the space
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking and unloading on your street

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • How you want to use the space
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Where other trades come in

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Adding or replacing insulation
  • Converting the loft itself, which is not our work
  • Electrical work in the loft

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.
