How we make loft storage for Belgravia
Loft rooms are often bedrooms, so storage for clothes matters. Wardrobes under the slope, drawers in the knee wall and shelves in the dormer can all work together. Planned together, they make the room feel ordered. For a home in Belgravia, it’s planned around your things. If your home has wasted space behind the knee walls and nowhere to store bags and boxes, eaves cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. A large share of the homes around Belgravia date from then. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.

What loft storage can’t fix
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Any work on the structure of the house
- Converting the loft itself, which isn’t our work
- Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves

Common questions about loft storage
Can you fit loft storage to the uneven walls of an older house in Belgravia?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Is Belgravia in the area you cover for loft storage?
Yes, we work across Westminster, Belgravia included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Which materials go into your loft storage?
The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?
It shouldn’t, if it’s designed properly. We design eaves storage so it does not block ventilation or squash insulation. If you have concerns about what’s already behind the eaves, it is worth asking whoever converted the loft.
How fitting day works
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.
- First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store, including the eaves and any dormer.
- At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured, as everything has to get up there.
- We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
- The storage is built in our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs.
- The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you.
Before fitting day
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
Arranging a design visit
Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, message us from the contact page with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
The problems loft storage solve
The most common reason is wasted space. Behind the knee walls, there’s space nobody can reach. Built-in storage makes that space useful.
Requests we hear often include:
- Unused space in a dormer
- Wasted space behind the knee walls
- A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
- A loft room with too many jobs
If you live in a flat close to London Victoria station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
What to check before you book
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Will the doors close with even gaps?

Making use of awkward spaces in Belgravia
About 60% of the homes in the area around Belgravia went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Belgravia include Church of Holy Trinity (Grade I), less than half a mile south, and Summer House in Buckingham Palace Garden (Grade I), under half a mile north-east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 66% of households in the area around Belgravia live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live near Green Park, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For a family home near Holy Trinity CofE Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters. It goes into the carcasses, the drawers and the shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.
Moisture-resistant MDF
A loft room can see more change in temperature than other rooms, so a stable material matters. It takes a spray-painted or hand-painted finish well. It is used for most of the visible parts.
