How we make loft storage for Kensington and Chelsea
A sloping ceiling leaves little room for a standard wardrobe. We shape wardrobes to the slope, putting hanging space at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it’s low. It makes the most of the room’s height. The design visit in Kensington and Chelsea is where we work it out. Typical reasons to get in touch are low eaves that nobody can use and furniture that can’t get up to the loft, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
- You contact us about storage in your converted loft.
- We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn. Let us know about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
- We send a written quote.
- Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit.

Tricky spaces in homes across Kensington and Chelsea
Homes across Kensington and Chelsea range from period terraces to post-war blocks and newer flats, and each kind has its own odd corners. Eaves cupboards are scribed and levelled on site.
The biggest shares of homes in Kensington and Chelsea were built before 1919 (about 66%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 10%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. More than half of the homes in Kensington and Chelsea (about 66%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many older terraces have had loft conversions, leaving eaves spaces and slopes that suit fitted storage. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 25% of households in Kensington and Chelsea, according to Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, Kensington and Chelsea included. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and discuss the design.
Kensington: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The Tower House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Living in a block of flats near Kensington Olympia station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
Flats, conversions and lettings
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.
How we price loft storage
What you pay depends on:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How many doors and drawers there are
- How square the room is
- The overall size of the piece
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.
What we need to know
When you contact us, these help most:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standalone furniture can move with you, and it may suit a short stay. Fitted storage stays with the house, and it uses the slopes in a way a standalone piece can’t. Which suits you depends on your plans.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
The problems loft storage solve
Some people want to hide clutter in the eaves. Eaves cupboards keep them out of sight. It keeps the room tidy.
People normally get in touch with us about things like these:
- Needing storage in a loft office
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
- Boxes and suitcases with no home
Honest limits
Not everything around loft storage is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Loft conversions, which we don’t carry out
- Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
- Electrical work in the loft
Questions from Kensington and Chelsea
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Is the furniture made to order?
Everything is built in our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Will eaves storage block the ventilation?
Not when it is planned well. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. We don’t alter insulation or vents.
How long will the loft storage fitting take?
The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Every part is built in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Do you carry out loft conversions?
No. We don’t carry out loft conversions. Our part is the storage once the loft is a finished room, including eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers and wardrobes.
