How we make wall beds for Clay Hill
Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. By day, the room is a living space, and at night it becomes a bedroom. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above, so the whole wall works hard. Most enquiries start with a flexible room for a growing family and a bed that looks like cupboards by day, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Some post-war homes have lightweight partitions between bedrooms, and tall furniture stands on the floor, tied back where the wall is strong enough. With many of the homes around Clay Hill built in the post-war years, each wall is checked before anything is designed. Loads are planned so nothing depends on a weak wall.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

From workshop to your room
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a post-war block of flats, the route in may include communal stairs, landings and a lift, so wall beds are made in sections sized for each. If the building has rules on lift use or working hours, it’s useful to tell us at the measuring visit.
- It starts with a short note from you.
- At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
- A quote in writing follows.
- We build the cabinets in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site.
Preparing the room
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
How to get a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, use our contact form.
Advice
Flats, leases and landlords
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.
Wall beds in Clay Hill: local notes
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 36% of the housing in the area around Clay Hill, with about 34% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 11 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Clay Hill. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Around a third of the homes in the area around Clay Hill (about 36%) were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, fixed to suit the wall.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John the Baptist, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. Close to Enfield Town Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

What prompts wall beds in Clay Hill
In a studio or a small flat, every bit of floor counts. A bed that folds up gives you a living room in the day and a bedroom at night.
If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:
- Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
- Shelves or a desk around the bed
- A bed that fills a little-used room
- A bed that looks like cupboards by day
If you live in a flat close to Gordon Hill station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
Looking after your furniture
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Allow space for pillows and duvets
- Let us know about the wall’s construction
- Check mattress size and weight limits
If the bed ever feels different when you lower or lift it, stop using it and get in touch. Don’t try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.
Let us know what the wall is made of if you know. The fixing depends on the wall, and we look at it when we measure.

FAQs: wall beds in Clay Hill
Do you make wall beds for homes in Clay Hill?
Yes, we work across Enfield, Clay Hill included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
I live near Gordon Hill station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Is a mattress included with the wall bed?
The mattress needs to suit the mechanism, including its size, depth and weight. We will go through those limits at the design visit so you can choose one that works.
