Loft storage in Palmers Green
How we make loft storage for Palmers Green
Our work is in loft rooms that are already converted, or lofts that are boarded. The conversion itself isn’t our work, and conversions come under Building Regulations. Once the room is finished, we can design storage to suit it. If you have a converted loft in Palmers Green, the design visit is the first step. People typically come to us about a loft room with too many jobs and a boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Around Palmers Green, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. That’s where fitted storage comes in, made to follow walls that are seldom true.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How fitting day works
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it’s useful to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
- Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
- In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall.
Before fitting day
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Starting with a design visit
To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

How we price loft storage
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- The overall size of the piece
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The number of doors and drawers
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.
Helping us understand the room
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- How you want to use the space
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
FAQs: loft storage in Palmers Green
Does a conservation area in or near Palmers Green affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Palmers Green?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.
How do you get large pieces into a loft?
We measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft room. Each section is made to fit the narrowest point, and the pieces are put together in the room.
How long does it take to fit loft storage?
How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Every part is made in our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
When you need someone else
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Building work to turn a loft into a room
- Electrical work in the loft
- Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from
Spray-painted finish
Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. It is done in our workshop before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.
Pull-out drawers
Drawers in the knee wall let you use the deep, low space without crawling in. Each one is sized for what it will hold. They’re ideal for clothes and bedding.
When is bespoke worth it?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Storage in Palmers Green homes: local notes
About 49% of the homes in the streets around Palmers Green went up before 1919, and about 30% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Palmers Green, Historic England’s list includes Broomfield House Broomfield Park (Grade II*), under half a mile west, and Parish Church of St John the Evangelist (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The share of homes built before 1919 around Palmers Green, about 49%, is well above the figure for Enfield as a whole, about 23%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of eaves cupboards.
