Where other trades come in

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Building work to turn a loft into a room

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Loft storage for homes in Cranham

A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, all made for the shape of the room. In Cranham, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make eaves cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe and a new loft conversion that needs storage.

Around Cranham, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the eaves cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Practical tips

Getting the most from loft storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
  • Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
  • Let us know about parking near your home

When we’ve finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep tape and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. A quick sort every so often helps. Heavy boxes are best kept low.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on every part of the storage. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.

Plinths and scribe strips

Loft rooms are seldom square. We use scribe strips and a plinth to take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.

Loft storage in Cranham: local notes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 64% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Cranham, with about 21% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Cranham include Upminster Hall (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 71% of households in the neighbourhood around Cranham live in detached or semi-detached houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

If you live in a period home close to St Luke's Cranham, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. If your children go to Hall Mead School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. For a flat near Upminster station, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.

  1. You tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft, as everything has to get up there.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs. It’s made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.

Advice

Common questions about loft storage

I live near Upminster station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.

Do you make loft storage for homes in Cranham?

Yes, Cranham is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Havering and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Why bespoke in Cranham?

Ready-made furniture has to come up the loft stairs in one piece or flat-packed. We make each piece in sections that fit up the stairs. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
