Romford Loft Storage
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on loft storage in Romford starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Needing storage in a loft office
- A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
- Nowhere to store bags and boxes

About our loft storage in Romford
We make each eaves cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the carcasses and drawers their strength, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is carried up and fitted in your home in Romford. If you’re living with a loft room with too many jobs and a converted loft with no fitted furniture, that’s what eaves cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
A good part of the housing around Romford is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Could you do it yourself?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Fitted storage in Romford
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Romford were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%) and since 2000 (about 30%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Romford include Parish Church of St Edward the Confessor (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and The Golden Lion Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile north. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Around a third of the homes in the streets around Romford (about 32%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Loft conversions are common in houses of that age, and the eaves can take fitted storage.
For a family home near Concordia Academy, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live near Lodge Farm Park, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

We cover homes on streets such as High Street, Market Place and Market Link, whether you want loft storage or another piece made for the room. We also cover Rush Green (1 mile south-west), Collier Row (1 mile north), Rise Park (1 mile north), Becontree Heath (1 mile south-west) and Chadwell Heath (2 miles west). We also make loft storage in nearby places like Hornchurch (2 miles south-east), Gallows Corner (2 miles north-east), Elm Park (2 miles south), Rainham (4 miles south), Upminster (3 miles east) and Ardleigh Green (2 miles east). Your questions about loft storage in Romford
Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Romford?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Romford station?
Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you get furniture up narrow loft stairs?
We make the storage in sections sized for the route. At the design visit, we measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landings. That way, even a large wardrobe can reach the loft.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Bespoke loft storage or ready-made?
With ready-made furniture, the colour is the maker’s choice. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it sits with the rest of the room. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

The problems loft storage solve
A boarded loft can be made far more useful with shelving. Storage in a boarded loft keeps everything organised. It is ideal for things you need now and then.
Here’s what loft storage can help with:
- A loft room with too many jobs
- A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
- Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
- A loft room that still feels unfinished
If you live in a flat close to Romford station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
What to check before you book
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Will the quote be in writing?
What it costs
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Spray painting or hand painting
- The width and height of the space
- How square the room is
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Before the design visit
A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
To get a quote for loft storage in Romford, drop us a line using the contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea, with sizes if you have them. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.
What happens on fitting day
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- First you tell us about the loft room and what you’d like to store there, and how you get up to it.
- We come to measure the room and the way up to it, and discuss the design, including the headroom under the slope.
- A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
- Your storage is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the slopes and the walls.
Before we arrive
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
