Making use of tricky spaces in Gallows Corner

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 37% of the housing in the area around Gallows Corner, with about 37% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Gallows Corner, Historic England’s list includes The Royal Liberty School (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in Gallows Corner, let us know during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

For a family home near Royal Liberty School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. For an older house near St Michael and All Angels Church, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

About our loft storage in Gallows Corner

A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. Our loft storage includes eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers, wardrobes under sloping ceilings and dormer shelving, each shaped to the room. For a home in Gallows Corner, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. People typically come to us about clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom and an empty dormer that could hold shelves; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Around Gallows Corner, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Do you need loft storage in Gallows Corner?

Many people get in touch once their loft conversion is complete. Standard furniture rarely suits the new room. Fitted storage finishes the room.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished
  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
  • Low eaves that nobody can use

Close to Raphael Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.

Doors and drawer fronts

Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Angled fronts are cut to follow the slope, keeping the lines neat.

Common questions about loft storage

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Gallows Corner?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

I live near Gidea Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?

A good design avoids that. We look behind the knee wall at the design visit and plan the storage so air can still move. Insulation and ventilation work itself is not ours.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

What affects the price in Gallows Corner

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It is useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit.

What to send when you get in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. It starts with some details from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, use our contact form.
