How we make loft storage for Havering
The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Pull-out drawers mean you do not have to crawl in. At the design visit in Havering, we will see what fits. Typical reasons to get in touch are a dormer that isn’t being used and ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.
- First you let us know about the loft room and what you’d like to store there, and how you get up to it.
- We come to measure the room and the way up to it, and go through the design.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish.
- Your storage is made in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the slopes and the walls.
How our quotes work
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Loft storage across Havering: local notes
Across Havering, flats and conversions rarely come with enough storage. Well-planned eaves cupboards can add storage while keeping the room usable.
The biggest shares of homes in Havering were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. About 36% of homes in Havering date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many interwar houses have had their lofts converted, leaving sloping ceilings and eaves to use; we build the storage once the loft is converted or boarded. About 35% of homes in Havering were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Where a post-war house has had its loft converted, the eaves and slopes can take fitted storage.
Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so we look at both at the measuring visit.
Romford: Close to Lodge Farm Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For a flat near Romford station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
Could you do it yourself?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Bespoke loft storage or ready-made?
Standard furniture does not allow for the insulation and ventilation behind the eaves. We plan the storage around what’s behind the knee wall. It helps keep the space in good order.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- How doors and drawers are fitted
Practical tips
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Count the clothes you will need to hang
- Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
- Mention any parking rules on your street
- Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
When we have finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep tape and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a door drops or a drawer catches, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us.
What prompts loft storage
Standard wardrobes do not fit under a sloping ceiling. A wardrobe made for the slope uses the full height. It’s often the main reason people get in touch about a loft bedroom.
Loft storage can help with:
- A boarded loft with no proper shelving
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
- A new loft conversion that needs storage
What it costs
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Parking near your home
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The number of doors and drawers
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
Helping us understand the room
Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, use our contact form.
Common questions about loft storage
What are your eaves cupboards made from?
Our loft storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
How much does loft storage cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.
Does eaves storage affect the insulation?
It shouldn’t, if it’s designed properly. The storage is planned around the insulation and ventilation behind the knee wall. For worries about existing insulation or vents, ask the people who did the conversion.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
Do you carry out loft conversions?
No. We don’t carry out loft conversions. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, from eaves cupboards to wardrobes under the slopes.
Will you travel outside London?
No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.
