Loft storage in Thornton Heath, Croydon

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on loft storage in Thornton Heath starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes
  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised

Ask about loft storage in Thornton Heath

Is bespoke worth it?

Loft walls are rarely straight, and floors are often out of level. Standard furniture leaves visible gaps. We scribe our storage to the slopes and walls, and set it level. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.

How we make loft storage for Thornton Heath

Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. We measure the route not just the room, so every section made at our workshop fits up the stairs. It’s part of the job for any loft room in Thornton Heath. Typical reasons to get in touch are seasonal things cluttering the loft room and ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace typically has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. A large share of the homes around Thornton Heath were built before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You let us know about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
  • Check the route up to the loft

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. Keep a note of the colour for later. Should you have a question about the storage, fill in our short enquiry form and we will help.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Storage in Thornton Heath homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Thornton Heath were built before 1919 (about 53%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Thornton Heath, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Stephen (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Terraced houses are more common around Thornton Heath than across Croydon: about 39% of households, against about 23%, the 2021 Census shows. Narrow halls and stairs in terraces mean the furniture comes in sections.

For a flat near Thornton Heath station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 2.4 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. If your children go to Winterbourne Junior Girls' School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Questions from Thornton Heath

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Thornton Heath?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

I live near Thornton Heath station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

How much does loft storage cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Drawers in the knee wall usually involve more work than simple cupboards, and the finish matters too. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Can you convert my loft as well?

No, the conversion itself is not our work. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, including eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers and wardrobes.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
