Loft storage in Upper Norwood, Croydon
In Upper Norwood, we design loft storage around the room you actually have. Your eaves cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.
- A loft room with too many jobs
- Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
- Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs

The problems loft storage solve
Many people get in touch once their loft conversion is complete. The room is there, but the furniture to fit it is not. Storage made for the slopes completes it.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- No wardrobe that fits under the slope
- Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
- A loft room with too many jobs
Kingswood House, about 0.8 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Whether they measure the room themselves
Loft storage for homes in Upper Norwood
We make each eaves cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and carcasses, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. It is then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Upper Norwood. If your home has wasted space behind the knee walls and a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, no two homes have quite the same walls and floors. Eaves cupboards are scribed and levelled on site, so they look straight even where the room isn’t. The finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

When is bespoke worth it?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

What else we make in Upper Norwood
Boards, parts and paint
Plinths and scribe strips
Loft floors are often out of level. A plinth or adjustable feet let us set the storage level, so the doors and drawers run true.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. You choose the colour.
What happens on fitting day
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. We plan the details of the day at the measuring visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
- Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
- The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
- We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Before fitting day
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Upper Norwood homes and loft storage
Homes built before 1919 make up about 35% of the housing in the streets around Upper Norwood, with about 25% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 11 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Upper Norwood. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around Upper Norwood (about 25%) were built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. In a post-war house with a converted loft, the space under the slopes is worth using.
Near listed buildings like Subway, about 0.5 miles east of the centre of Upper Norwood, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

Questions from Upper Norwood
I live near Gipsy Hill station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.
I live in a flat in Upper Norwood. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Do you carry out loft conversions?
No. We do not carry out loft conversions. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, including eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers and wardrobes.
How long will the loft storage fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is built in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
What materials do you use for loft storage?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Both are stable, which matters in a loft room. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
What it costs
Several things affect the price:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- The internal fittings
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.
Before the design visit
To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
