Ask about loft storage in Gospel Oak

Do you need loft storage in Gospel Oak?

Many people get in touch once their loft conversion is complete. Standard furniture rarely suits the new room. Fitted storage finishes the room.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Needing storage in a loft office
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs

Near listed buildings like Church of St Martin, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Gospel Oak, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

What to check before you book

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Loft storage for homes in Gospel Oak

Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so the sections we make in our workshop can be carried up. It is part of the job for any loft room in Gospel Oak. People typically come to us about boxes piled on loft boards and unused space in a dormer, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of the homes around Gospel Oak date from then. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that is not. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Loft storage in Gospel Oak: local notes

In the streets around Gospel Oak, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Dartmouth Park Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Gospel Oak. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 48% of homes in the area around Gospel Oak were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Loft conversions are common in London terraces, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings that storage can use; we build storage once the loft is converted or boarded.

If your children go to Carlton Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. The wider area includes historic houses like Keats House, about 0.9 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Gospel Oak is about 2 miles south-east of St Pancras, in the London Borough of Camden. Anywhere in Gospel Oak, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. Our work takes in places right across Camden.

Design visits and fitting in NW5, NW3 and NW1 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Our area takes in homes on streets like Rona Road, Dale Road and Regis Road, along with the roads around them, for loft storage and any of our other fitted furniture. Neighbouring places we cover for loft storage include Lissenden Gardens (1 mile north), Dartmouth Park (1 mile north-east), Kentish Town (1 mile south), Tufnell Park (1 mile east) and Chalk Farm (1 mile south). Across the rest of Camden, our area takes in St Pancras (2 miles south-east), West End (3 miles south), St Giles (3 miles south), Seven Dials (3 miles south), West Hampstead (2 miles west) and Holborn (3 miles south-east).

Looking after your furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Choose a calm colour for the loft
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. It is worth keeping a record of the paint colour. If anything is not right with the storage, send us a few details through our contact form and we will talk it through.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. It helps to clear out now and then. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Loft conversions, which we do not carry out
  • Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off
  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Eaves doors and drawers

Fitting day, step by step

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Starting with a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Questions we’re often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Gospel Oak affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Gospel Oak?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Eaves cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

How much does loft storage cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
