Loft storage for homes in Tufnell Park

The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Drawers bring the back of the space within reach. At the design visit in Tufnell Park, we will see what fits. We make eaves cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are boxes piled on loft boards and seasonal things cluttering the loft room.

With a large share of homes around Tufnell Park built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

When we have finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Loft rooms can be warm in summer and cool in winter. Keep the room ventilated. That keeps the storage and the paint in good order.

Making use of awkward spaces in Tufnell Park

About 56% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Tufnell Park went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 38 entries within half a mile of the centre of Tufnell Park. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Tufnell Park. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to Upper Holloway station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. Witanhurst, about 1.2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A standalone wardrobe can go with you when you move. Fitted storage stays with the house, and it uses the slopes in a way a standalone piece cannot. Which suits you depends on your plans. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines, with panels and details to suit the house.

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.

From workshop to your room

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about storage in your loft, whether it is a converted room or a boarded space.
  2. We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls, and talk through the design with you.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, shaped to the loft, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill, with the doors and drawers checked with you.

What we don’t do

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Any work on the structure of the house
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
  • Loft conversions, which we do not carry out

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Common questions about loft storage

I live in a flat in Tufnell Park. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

My home in Tufnell Park is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How much does loft storage cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. For a quote, message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What prompts loft storage in Tufnell Park

The most common reason is wasted space. The low spaces at the edge of a loft room are hard to use. Cupboards and drawers built into the knee wall put it to work.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • A dormer that is not being used
  • Needing storage in a loft office
  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Benet and All Saints, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.
