Wall beds for your home in Gospel Oak

How we make wall beds for Gospel Oak

In a studio flat, a wall bed can make the main room feel much larger. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat, and at night it becomes a bedroom. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above to make the most of the wall. We make wall beds from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are more floor space in a studio flat and a hobby room with a bed for guests.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Gospel Oak built before 1919, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Is it time for wall beds?

Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Shelves, cupboards or a desk built around it turn one wall into storage, workspace and a bed.

Wall beds can help with:

  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • A spare room that’s rarely slept in
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed

If you live in a period home close to Highgate Road Chapel, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how often the bed is used. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
  2. We come to measure, look at the wall and floor, and go through the layout with you. We also check there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. You get a written quote for the bed cabinet and any storage around it, for you to look over.
  4. We build and finish the bed housing and storage in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Starting with a design visit

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Let us know what the wall is made of if you know
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Keep children away while the bed moves

New paintwork takes a while to harden. Treat the cabinet gently at first, and clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth.

Leasehold flats can have rules on alterations, so check your lease early. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Gospel Oak?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Gospel Oak station?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?

Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall, so the whole wall is useful. The design keeps clear space in front for the bed to fold down.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Is a wall bed safe?

A secure fixing and careful use are what matter. We fix the mechanism as its maker specifies, and you keep the space in front clear and children away while it moves.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.

Honest limits

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Wiring for lights or chargers

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Why bespoke in Gospel Oak?

Off-the-shelf units can leave gaps at the sides or top. A bespoke cabinet can run the full width and height, with storage or shelves filling the rest of the wall. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Martin, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For a flat near Gospel Oak station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
