East Ham Loft Storage

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make loft storage for homes in East Ham, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Needing storage in a loft office
  • A dormer that is not being used
  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving

Loft storage in East Ham

About our loft storage in East Ham

Behind the short walls at the edge of a loft room, there is often space going to waste. Eaves cupboards and pull-out drawers built into the knee wall put it to work. Drawers bring the back of the space within reach. At the design visit in East Ham, we’ll see what fits. We make eaves cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about boxes and suitcases with no home and a loft room with too many jobs.

Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are typically solid brick, which can be cold, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. That matters around East Ham, where a large share of the homes are that old. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the eaves cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Note the things that need a home in the loft
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can

Don’t pack things so tightly that air can’t move behind the knee wall. The storage is planned to keep airflow, so leave that space open. It helps prevent damp behind the storage.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Making use of tricky spaces in East Ham

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around East Ham were built before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 11 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of East Ham. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home in East Ham is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If your children go to St Michael's Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If you live in a period home close to St Bartholomew's Church, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. For a flat near Barking station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

East Ham is about 1 mile west of Plaistow, within the London Borough of Newham. East Ham is part of the area we cover. Our work takes in places right across Newham.

In E6, IG11, E13 and E12, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Whether you live on a street such as High Street South, Market Street and High Street North or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for loft storage. East Ham is near the A13 and A117; on busy main roads, unloading eaves cupboards takes a little planning. Close by, we also work in Wallend (1 mile north-east), Upton Park (1 mile west), Plashet (1 mile north), Beckton (1 mile south-east) and Greengate (1 mile west). Across the rest of Newham, our area takes in Stratford (3 miles west), Canning Town (2 miles south-west), Forest Gate (2 miles north-west), Maryland (3 miles west), East Village (3 miles north-west) and Three Mills (3 miles west). As one of the bigger places in Newham, East Ham is covered for loft storage and everything else we make.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

How we price loft storage

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The number of doors and drawers

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the measuring visit.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the loft room, whether it is a converted room or a boarded space.
  2. We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your storage is made in our workshop, shaped to the loft.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill.

Before we arrive

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

In a loft room, walls and floors are seldom square. Ready-made pieces show the gaps. We scribe our storage to the slopes and walls, and set it level. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Furniture made for the space fills it.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit.

Why us?

  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home

Common questions about loft storage

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

My home in East Ham is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you convert my loft as well?

No. We do not carry out loft conversions. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, including eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers and wardrobes.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. Plastering and decorating aren’t part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. The wardrobe follows the angle of the ceiling, with hanging where there’s height. It uses the full height of the room. We plan it at the measuring visit.

Which materials go into your loft storage?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
