Walk-in wardrobes in Shacklewell: what you get
Many London homes have a small room that’s awkward as a bedroom. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. If you are living with proper shoe storage and a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, and a large share of the homes around Shacklewell are that old. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What affects the price in Shacklewell
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The width and height of the space
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
What we need to know
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:
- How you want to use the space
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Examples of the look you’re after
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

What we don’t do
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
- Electrical work in the room
- Fixing the cause of damp
Not sure whether your space suits walk-in wardrobes? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Shacklewell
Homes built before 1919 make up about 50% of the housing in the streets around Shacklewell, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 16 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Shacklewell. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. For fitting in Shacklewell, a van usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Barnabas, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. For families living near The Petchey Academy, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Near listed buildings like Church of St Matthias, less than half a mile west of the centre of Shacklewell, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What happens on fitting day
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the measuring visit.
- You get in touch and tell us about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
- A written quote follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
- The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
Preparing the room

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Questions we are often asked
My home in Shacklewell is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Walk-in wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
I live near Rectory Road station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?
Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. The units are designed with ventilation in mind.
Materials and finishes
Hanging rails
We plan rails for full-length garments and for double hanging to suit your clothes.
Spray-painted finish
You choose the colour, and we apply it in the workshop.
When is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
