Storage in Southwark homes: local notes
Homes built since 2000 make up about 46% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Southwark, with about 17% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Southwark, Historic England’s list includes The George Inn (Grade I), under half a mile north-east, and Church of St George the Martyr (Grade II*), under half a mile east. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, the rest of London included. Vans bringing furniture to Southwark fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near Borough Welsh Congregational Chapel, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. Mansion House, about 0.9 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.
Southwark is about 3 miles south of East Dulwich, in the London Borough of Southwark. Homes in Southwark are part of the area we cover for loft storage, as part of our work in every London borough. We cover places right across the rest of London.
Here we cover the SE1 and SE11 postcode area for loft storage. Whether you live on a street such as Borough Square, Trinity Church Square and Merrick Square or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for loft storage. Southwark sits close to the A300 and B240. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Neighbouring places we cover for loft storage include Tower Hill (1 mile north-east), City of London (1 mile north), Aldgate (1 mile north-east), Bishopsgate (1 mile north-east) and Barbican Estate (1 mile north). Elsewhere in the rest of London, we also cover East Dulwich (3 miles south), Herne Hill (3 miles south), Camberwell (2 miles south), Peckham (3 miles south-east), Rotherhithe (2 miles east) and Surrey Quays (2 miles east).

The streets we cover here include those near The BFI Reuben Library, The Gladstone Arms and London School of Musical Theatre and the streets around them. You will also find St Mary-at-Hill (0.9 miles north-east) and Ark Globe Academy (less than half a mile south-east). The nearest railway station is Elephant & Castle station, roughly 0.5 miles south of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include Surrey Dispensary (a few minutes’ walk south-east) and Baynard's Castle (0.8 miles north). Not far away are Ludgate Hill.
About our loft storage in Southwark
Getting furniture up to a loft room is part of the planning. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so every section made at our workshop fits up the stairs. It’s a step that matters for any loft in Southwark. If you are living with low eaves that nobody can use and a boarded loft with no proper shelving, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
A hall in a home built since 2000 is often compact, with several doors leading off it, so there may be only one useful stretch of wall. With many homes around Southwark built since 2000, the hall is often where we look first. A shallow cupboard can take coats, shoes and the vacuum cleaner without blocking a door.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Caring for painted furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
- Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. Keep a note of the colour for later. If anything isn’t right with the storage, tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll talk it through.
Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If something stops working smoothly, tell us about the room on our contact form and describe it.
How it’s made
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting gives the storage a very even surface. It is applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.
Doors and drawer fronts
An access door into the eaves can match the rest of the fronts. It opens wide, so you can still get into the eaves. Around it, the fronts can be drawers, doors or a mix.

What else we make in Southwark
Is it time for loft storage?
A sloping ceiling makes a standard wardrobe impossible. A wardrobe made for the slope uses the full height. It is often the main reason people get in touch about a loft bedroom.
Requests we hear often include:
- Needing storage in a loft office
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
- No wardrobe that fits under the slope
If your children go to Charles Dickens Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.
Before you choose who makes it
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
Common questions about loft storage
Do you cover homes near Elephant & Castle station?
Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do you make loft storage for homes in Southwark?
Yes, Southwark is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?
Yes. A wardrobe made for the slope fits where a standard one cannot. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It is scribed to the slope and walls.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.
What we don’t do
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
- Loft conversions, which we do not carry out
- Any wiring, which needs an electrician
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting works for loft storage
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.
- You contact us about storage in your converted loft.
- We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn. Let us know about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
- We send a quote in writing.
- Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.
Preparing the room
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
How to get a quote
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, message us from the contact page with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
