How we make loft storage for Rotherhithe

The space behind the knee wall usually has insulation and ventilation to think about. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If anything looks wrong behind the eaves, it is worth asking whoever converted the loft. When we visit in Rotherhithe, we’ll see what’s there. We make eaves cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a boarded loft with no proper shelving and wasted space behind the knee walls.

A large number of homes around Rotherhithe date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer developments. Where a boiler or cylinder sits in a cupboard, the design keeps the clearances its maker sets out. Cupboards can be shallow where space is tight, so the hallway still feels open.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Loft storage in Rotherhithe: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Rotherhithe were built since 2000 (about 39%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 34%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Rotherhithe, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary Rotherhithe (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west, and The Finnish Church (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Rotherhithe (about 39%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. In a newer house with a converted loft, the space under the slopes can be used; we build once the loft is converted or boarded.

If your children go to Alfred Salter Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. For an older house near Holy Trinity Church, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.

Rotherhithe is about 3 miles south-west of East Dulwich, in the London Borough of Southwark. Anywhere in Rotherhithe, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made at our workshop and fitting in your home. We list Rotherhithe among 21 places we cover in Southwark.

Postcode districts we cover here for loft storage: SE16, SE8 and E1W. We cover homes on streets like Bush Road, Gomm Road and Swan Road, along with the roads around them, for loft storage and any of our other fitted furniture. Rotherhithe sits close to the A200. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. If you’re just outside Rotherhithe, we also cover Surrey Quays (1 mile south), Surrey Canal (1 mile south), South Bermondsey (1 mile south-west), Millwall (1 mile south-east) and North Greenwich (1 mile south-east). Across the rest of Southwark, our area takes in East Dulwich (3 miles south-west), Herne Hill (4 miles south-west), Elephant and Castle (3 miles west), Bankside (3 miles west), Southwark (2 miles west) and St George's Fields (3 miles west).

Fitting day, step by step

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about storage in your loft.
  2. We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls, and discuss the design with you.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed. You can ask us about any of it.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, shaped to the loft, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the doors and drawers checked with you.

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

How to get a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Choose a calm colour for the loft
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer

Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. It’s useful to clear out now and then. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.

What prompts loft storage in Rotherhithe

Some people want to hide clutter in the eaves. Eaves cupboards keep them out of sight. It keeps the room tidy.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving
  • Standard furniture that will not go up the loft stairs
  • A loft room with too many jobs
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished

Queen's House, about 2.1 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

Questions from Rotherhithe

I live in a flat in Rotherhithe. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you make loft storage for a home in Rotherhithe?

Yes, we work across Southwark, Rotherhithe included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Do you carry out loft conversions?

No, the conversion itself is not our work. Our part is the storage once the loft is a finished room, from eaves cupboards to wardrobes under the slopes.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Honest limits

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Converting the loft itself, which is not our work
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
  • Insulation or ventilation work behind the eaves
