Loft Storage in Herne Hill

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on loft storage in Herne Hill starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Boxes and suitcases with no home
  • A dormer that is not being used

Herne Hill homes and loft storage

In the area around Herne Hill, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 59%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Herne Hill, 11 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. In Herne Hill, a van will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking is worth mentioning during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Paul, less than half a mile west of the centre of Herne Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Kingswood House, about 1.7 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. For families living near Judith Kerr Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Herne Hill is in the London Borough of Southwark, about 1 mile north-east of East Dulwich. We cover Herne Hill as part of our work across Southwark. We list Herne Hill among 21 places we cover in Southwark.

Postcode districts we cover here for loft storage: SE22, SW2 and SE24. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Jelf Road, Dewey Lane and Talma Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want loft storage or another piece made for the room. Herne Hill sits close to the A204 and A2214. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover the places around Herne Hill: Dulwich Village (1 mile south-east), East Dulwich (1 mile north-east), Dulwich (1 mile south-east), Denmark Hill (1 mile north) and Camberwell (1 mile north). Across the rest of Southwark, our area takes in Bermondsey (3 miles north), Elephant and Castle (3 miles north), Bankside (4 miles north), Southwark (3 miles north), St George's Fields (3 miles north) and Newington Butts (3 miles north). As one of the bigger places in Southwark, Herne Hill is covered for loft storage and everything else we make.

Loft storage in Herne Hill

Each eaves cupboard is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and carcasses, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s carried up and fitted in your home in Herne Hill. We make eaves cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about seasonal things cluttering the loft room and a new loft conversion that needs storage.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. With a large share of the homes around Herne Hill built before 1919, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

With ready-made furniture, the colour is the maker’s choice. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, so it can match the walls and the woodwork. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It is applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.

Doors and drawer fronts

Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. The angled fronts match the ceiling, keeping the lines neat.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the loft room, whether it is a converted room or a boarded space.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up, and go through the design with you.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill.

Before fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Starting with a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Common questions about loft storage

Can you fit loft storage to the uneven walls of an older house in Herne Hill?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do you make loft storage for homes in Herne Hill?

Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London, and Herne Hill is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do you do the loft conversion too?

No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. Loft conversions are building work, with Building Regulations to follow. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. A wardrobe made for the slope fits where a standard one cannot. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It’s cut to fit the ceiling and walls exactly.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The storage is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
  • Choose a calm colour for the loft

When you load the drawers and cupboards, put heavy things low. That keeps the drawers running smoothly. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.

Sharp edges and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Store tools in a box, not loose against the doors. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.
