Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Barkingside?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you work outside London?

No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

The space in front of the wardrobe typically decides it. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We’ll look at the room with you during the design visit.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. We do not plaster or decorate. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.

About our fitted wardrobes in Barkingside

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, scribed to follow the uneven walls. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. If your home has an awkward slope in a loft bedroom and dusty space on top of the wardrobe, that is what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Barkingside, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Where other trades come in

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Tips worth knowing

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that is barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, as they can dull the paint.

Do not overload a single rail or shelf. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so tell us during the design visit if you need to store something heavy.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Ask for a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What affects the price in Barkingside

What you pay depends on:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How big the furniture is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Getting in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • How you want to use the space
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Barkingside

In the neighbourhood around Barkingside, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 59%) and the years since 2000 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Barkingside, Historic England’s list includes Cairns Cottage at Barnardo's (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Twenty-two Cottage Homes at Barnardo's (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. Where a home in Barkingside is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that during the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

If you live in a flat close to Seven Kings station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your children go to Avanti Court Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If your home is one of the older houses near Children's Church And Lych Gate At Barnardo's, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Barkingside is part of the London Borough of Redbridge, about 3 miles north-west of Woodford. From period terraces to newer flats in Barkingside, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. In Redbridge, Barkingside is one of the places we cover.
