Built-in Bookshelves in Blackheath

Planning built-in bookshelves for a home in Blackheath? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files

Built-in bookshelves for your home in Blackheath

Built-in bookshelves in Blackheath: what you get

In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste and somewhere to keep toys and books tidy.

Rooms from the 1950s and 1960s tend to be plain, with flat walls and simple skirting. Many homes around Blackheath were built between 1945 and the early 1970s, so built-in bookshelves often have no period details to work around. The furniture can then become the main feature of the room.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

What we do not do

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Cupboards below
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the shelving and hides a sloping floor. Its height can match the skirting board.

Shelves

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or both. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing.

Questions we’re often asked

My home in Blackheath is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Blackheath?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The fitting depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The bookcase is made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

That depends on how the wall is built. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall, into sound brick or studs. Where a wall can’t take the load, we will say so and suggest another approach.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so it helps to tell us at the measuring visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You tell us about your books and the wall you have in mind. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. Once you’re happy, the shelving is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Arranging a design visit

To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a quote in writing follows.

Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and built-in bookshelves can be designed to work around them. For a flat near Blackheath station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Manor House Gardens? Why bespoke in Blackheath?

Bespoke isn’t instant: there is a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you are only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. Skirting boards stop standalone furniture sitting flat against the wall, which wastes depth and gathers dust. Built-in pieces sit tight to the wall, scribed over the skirting.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
