What TV and media units cannot fix

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Painting the walls and ceiling

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

TV and media units in Manor House

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That job is for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. It is best done before we fit. If your home has space for a soundbar and speakers and standard units leaving gaps, that is what TV and media units are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Rooms in houses from before 1919 tend to have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Manor House date from then. That gives full-height TV and media units room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Where a fireplace has been blocked up, the chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before units go in.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.

How we price TV and media units

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Parking near your home
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

What to send when you get in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Approximate measurements of the space

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Living-room carpentry in Manor House: local notes

About 54% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Manor House went up before 1919, and about 18% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Manor House, Historic England’s list includes Engine House of Metropolitan Water Board (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south, and Church of St Olave (Grade II), less than half a mile east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Hackney is inside it. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Manor House, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

If your children go to Woodberry Down Community Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Close to Chestnuts Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

What prompts TV and media units in Manor House

Boxes, consoles and routers on the floor are a familiar sight. A unit gives every box its own space, with air to keep it cool, and keeps the floor clear.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • Nowhere good for speakers
  • Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
  • Cables trailing across the wall

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Olave, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

FAQs: TV and media units in Manor House

I live in a flat in Manor House. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.
