Fitted wardrobes for homes in Clerkenwell

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls to help avoid condensation and mould. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. People typically come to us about standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and a bedroom that never feels tidy, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

When floor space is tight, the space over the door and above the bed head is often wasted. With most households around Clerkenwell in purpose-built flats, fitted furniture that bridges those spaces is worth considering. Higher cupboards are best for things you use less often.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Honest limits

Not everything around fitted wardrobes is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

What affects the price in Clerkenwell

The price for your room depends on:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The width and height of the space
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Before the design visit

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it’s useful to send:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Your postcode and the borough

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Clerkenwell in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes. Clerkenwell is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Islington and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Farringdon station?

Yes, homes across Islington and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

The space in front of the wardrobe usually decides it. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We look at it with you when we measure.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Clerkenwell?

Couples often want storage that works for two. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Not enough hanging space
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes

If your children go to St Peter and St Paul RC Primary School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured along with the room itself: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you.
  3. We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors.

Before fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

Getting a quote

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
