TV and media units in Holborn, Camden

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on TV and media units in Holborn starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • Leads that show from every angle
  • Somewhere to keep games tidy

What affects the price in Holborn

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The number of doors and drawers

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Helping us understand the room

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.

About our TV and media units in Holborn

Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar normally sits just below the TV, while larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors, so we plan open spaces for them. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about space for a soundbar and speakers and empty alcoves beside the TV.

With most households around Holborn in purpose-built flats, getting the furniture into the building matters as much as the design. Each piece is built in sections that fit the stairs, the lift and the doorways, and assembled and fitted in place. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Honest limits

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Plastering or decorating around the unit

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Built-in living-room furniture in Holborn

In the streets around Holborn, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 44%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Holborn is partly covered by the Bloomsbury Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. A van working in Holborn will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Dr Johnson's House, about 0.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If you live in a period home close to St Alban's Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Living in a block of flats near Farringdon station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Holborn is about 1 mile north-west of St Pancras, part of the London Borough of Camden. From period terraces to newer flats in Holborn, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Holborn is one of the places in Camden where we make TV and media units.

In WC1X, WC1N and EC1R, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Shoe Lane, Drury Lane and New Square, along with the roads around them, whether you want TV and media units or another piece made for the room. Holborn sits close to the A4 and A40, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. If you are just outside Holborn, we also cover Farringdon (1 mile east), St Pancras (1 mile north-west), Clare Market (1 mile south), Smithfield (1 mile east) and Temple Bar (1 mile south). Across the rest of Camden, our area takes in Hampstead (4 miles north-west), West Hampstead (4 miles north-west), Agar Town (2 miles north-west), Kentish Town (2 miles north-west), Greenhill (4 miles north-west) and Chalk Farm (2 miles north-west).

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standalone TV units cost less and arrive quickly. It is also easy to replace a stand when your equipment changes. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. It is then put together in the room.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Why work with us in Holborn

  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
  • Built around your room
  • Scribed to uneven walls

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what to look for in a quote.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all.

  1. You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment.
  2. We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

How to get a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Your questions about TV and media units in Holborn

How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in Holborn?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Holborn?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, with open backs, gaps or openings. Each box should have its own space.

Can you add sockets behind the TV?

That is a job for your electrician. It is best done before the unit goes in.

How do I get a quote?

The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

Cable routes are built into the design. Where the cables meet the wall depends on where the sockets are, and your electrician can move them if needed.
