TV and media units in Upton Park: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Upton Park were built before 1919 (about 69%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 11%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Upton Park, Historic England’s list includes Boleyn Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and Passmore Edwards Library (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Upton Park (about 69%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. In houses of that age, the chimney breast often becomes the TV wall, with cupboards in the alcoves for set-top boxes and speakers, with cable routes and ventilation planned in.
For an older house near St Martin's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If you live in a flat close to Woodgrange Park station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. Eastbury Manor House, about 2.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
Upton Park is in the London Borough of Newham, about 1 mile south-west of Plaistow. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Upton Park is part of that. Across Newham, we cover Upton Park.
In E13, E6 and E7, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Streets in the area include May Road, Fry Road and Cave Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for TV and media units. If you’re just outside Upton Park, we also cover Greengate (1 mile south-west), Upton (1 mile north-west), Plaistow (1 mile south-west), Plashet (1 mile north-east) and East Ham (1 mile east). We also make TV and media units in nearby places such as Stratford (2 miles west), Maryland (2 miles west), East Village (2 miles north-west), Three Mills (2 miles west), Mill Meads (2 miles west) and Custom House (2 miles south).

TV and media units in Upton Park: what you get
Cables are the part most people want to hide. We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with holes, channels and access panels so leads can be added or changed later. We make the routes, and your electrician handles any wiring. We make TV and media units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about a big screen that dominates the wall and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste.
In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Upton Park, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Before and after fitting day
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Talk to your electrician early about sockets
- List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
- Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
- Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned rather than drilling new holes. It keeps everything neat.
Leave any new socket or wiring work to your electrician, and do not daisy-chain adaptors.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Your questions about TV and media units in Upton Park
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Upton Park?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.
Can you make TV and media units for a home in Upton Park?
Yes, Upton Park is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Newham and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?
We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. Each box should have its own space, and it’s worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.
When you need someone else
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Repairing plaster or redecorating
- New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
- Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What else we make in Upton Park
From workshop to your room
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so TV and media units are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.

- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room.

How to get a quote
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

What affects the price in Upton Park
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking and unloading on your street
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
What we need to know
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it helps to send:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Approximate measurements of the space
Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
