About our TV and media units in Sydenham Hill

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places. That is work for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. It is best done before we fit. We make TV and media units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wasted space around the screen and a cabinet that traps heat.

Many homes around Sydenham Hill date from the post-war decades. Rooms from that era are often squarer than in older houses, and many have no chimney breast at all. That makes a full wall of TV and media units a strong option, or a recess built out with cupboards either side. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Questions from Sydenham Hill

I live in a flat in Sydenham Hill. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. TV and media units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Sydenham Hill?

Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London, and Sydenham Hill is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

How is the price worked out?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Is there room for a soundbar?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar. Bring the sizes to the design visit.

Why people ask for TV and media units in Sydenham Hill

Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. Building it into the alcoves or around the chimney breast makes it part of the room, rather than the focus of it.

TV and media units can help with:

  • Empty alcoves beside the TV
  • Speakers muffled behind doors
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV

The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 0.6 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

From workshop to your room

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so let us know what applies at the design visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure and discuss the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. You get a written quote covering the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it’s in and is easy to touch up later.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Getting a quote

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Before and after fitting day

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Decide where you will sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
  • Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf

Use the access panels and cable routes when you add or change leads instead of making new ones. It keeps the unit tidy.

Do not stack boxes on top of each other in one space. Give each its own space.

What TV and media units can’t fix

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
