Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

TV and media units for homes in Hatton

A built-in TV unit gives the screen, the boxes, the speakers and the cables one planned home. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. For a living room in Hatton, we start with a design visit to measure and talk through what you use. Most enquiries start with bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and space for a soundbar and speakers, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Hatton, so it’s a layout worth planning for. TV and media units usually go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Common questions about TV and media units

Is Hatton in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes. Hatton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hillingdon and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

I live near Heathrow Terminal 4 Rail station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

How much will my TV unit cost?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a written quote after the design visit.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The fitting depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop.

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Ask for a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • The internal fittings
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Helping us understand the room

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • How you want to use the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a written quote follows.

What TV and media units cannot fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Connecting and setting up your equipment
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Structural changes to the wall

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

How it’s made

Shelves

Speakers and books suit open shelves, while cupboards hide the rest.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to meet walls that aren’t straight, closing the gaps.

TV and media units in Hatton: local notes

In the streets around Hatton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Hatton, Historic England’s list includes Green Man Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Hillingdon included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Hatton. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to The Parish Church of the Good Shepherd, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If you live near Hounslow Heath, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. For a family home near Cranford Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.
