TV and media units in Coney Hall: local notes

About 63% of the homes in the area around Coney Hall went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Coney Hall, Historic England’s list includes The Swan Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east, and The White Lodge (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 61% of households in the neighbourhood around Coney Hall, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

For a family home near Forest Academy, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If your home is one of the older houses near St Francis of Assisi, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Coney Hall is about 5 miles east of Orpington, in the London Borough of Bromley. Anywhere in Coney Hall, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made at our workshop and fitting in your home. We list Coney Hall among 49 places we cover in Bromley.

TV and media units for homes in Coney Hall

TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. You choose a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you prefer. We fit across Bromley and the rest of London, after a design visit and a quote in writing. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are boxes with no ventilation and equipment with nowhere proper to go.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, and the proportions of TV and media units are set to match. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Coney Hall, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Why bespoke in Coney Hall?

Off-the-shelf TV units come in a few set colours. We paint ours in the colour you choose. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Why choose us

  • Work across the whole of London
  • We visit, measure and go through the design before we quote
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

See how bespoke compares with ready-made and how to compare quotes.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You send us some details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use, including the size of the screen.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it’s useful to have them in mind early.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Related advice

Do you need TV and media units in Coney Hall?

Others are tired of furniture that doesn’t fit. Standard TV stands rarely suit an tricky wall, and a bespoke unit is made for the space.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Nowhere good for speakers
  • Wasted space around the screen
  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go

If you live near Millers Pond, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

What to check before you book

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Before and after fitting day

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
  • Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it

A soft, slightly damp cloth is all painted surfaces need. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.

Heavy equipment is best kept low, and no single shelf overloaded.

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Coney Hall?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Coney Hall?

Yes, we work across Bromley, Coney Hall included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?

If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position, with a route for the cables. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket, which we look at during the design visit.

What affects the price of TV and media units?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

What affects the price in Coney Hall

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Before the design visit

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
