Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Hither Green

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Hither Green

A walk-in wardrobe needs air moving through it, especially on an external wall, which can be colder than internal walls. Good ventilation helps avoid condensation and mould, and we design the units to allow for it. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe and proper shoe storage; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Older bedrooms usually have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Hither Green date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around, so the furniture suits the house.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Open rail systems are simple and adaptable, which suits some people well. A fitted walk-in wardrobe adds doors, drawers and shelves where you want them, painted to match the room. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Why us?

  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • Work across the whole of London
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Saturday work by prior arrangement

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what to look for in a quote.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

Several things affect the price:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How big the furniture is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Hither Green

My home in Hither Green is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Hither Green?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, especially on an external wall, which can be colder and damper. We allow for ventilation in the design.

What happens during the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

How much does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. First, you tell us about the space. A line on how you’ll use the room helps.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through hanging, shoe storage and a dressing table, planned around the way you get dressed.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted in your home.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Walk-in wardrobes in Hither Green: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 50% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Hither Green, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 8 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Hither Green. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. A van working in Hither Green will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 2 miles north. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. For an older house near Church of St Swithun, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. Living in a block of flats near Hither Green station? Then walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
