Wall beds in Hither Green: what you get
The mattress has to suit the mechanism, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We’ll talk through what suits the bed during the design visit, so the mattress you choose fits. People typically come to us about more floor space in a studio flat and somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Floors in older houses often slope, which matters around Hither Green, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

What affects the price in Hither Green
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- The width and height of the space
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Before the design visit
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- How you want to use the space
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Your postcode and the borough
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.
What it’s made from
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting suits a cabinet you want to look crisp, and it is done before fitting.
Shelves
Shelves can go above or beside the bed cabinet to make use of the whole wall.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Why bespoke in Hither Green?
A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, and that has its appeal. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place day after day. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Common questions about wall beds
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hither Green?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hither Green station?
Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Will you provide a mattress for the bed?
What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We will explain its limits at the design visit, so you can choose with confidence.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How fitting day works
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You tell us about the room and who the bed is for.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- The bed housing and any shelves are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. We show you how the bed works before we leave.
Before we arrive
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Hither Green were built before 1919 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
If your children go to Brindishe Manor School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Queen's House, about 2 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. Close to Manor House Gardens? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.
