Shepherd's Bush TV and Media Units

Thinking about TV and media units in Shepherd's Bush? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing.

  • Cables trailing across the wall
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard

TV and media units for homes in Shepherd's Bush

Cables are the part most people want to hide. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. The routes are ours, while any wiring is for your electrician. Most enquiries start with nowhere good for speakers and a tangle of wires behind the TV, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Shepherd's Bush, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Main rooms in houses like these typically have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, which gives TV and media units an obvious place to go. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Drawers keep controllers and games tidy. They’re painted in the same colour as the rest.

Birch plywood

Long shelves under a screen need to stay straight. Birch plywood helps.

Living-room storage in Shepherd's Bush

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Shepherd's Bush were built before 1919 (about 67%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 52 entries within half a mile of the centre of Shepherd's Bush. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Shepherd's Bush (about 67%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. In houses of that age, the chimney breast often becomes the TV wall, with cupboards in the alcoves for set-top boxes and speakers.

If your children go to Addison Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St John the Baptist, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Leighton House, about 0.9 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the unit.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Arranging a design visit

Why bespoke in Shepherd's Bush?

Bought media units are made in set widths, and rarely fill an alcove or a wall. A bespoke unit is scribed to the walls and can run to the ceiling. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Why choose us

  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement

Your questions about TV and media units in Shepherd's Bush

I live near Shepherds Bush station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit TV and media units to the uneven walls of an older house in Shepherd's Bush?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Will the cables be hidden?

We plan cable routes through the unit from the start. Where cables reach the wall depends on the sockets, and your electrician can move them if needed.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
