Your questions about TV and media units in Leyton Grange

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Leyton Midland Road station?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Leyton Grange?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?

We don’t do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.

TV and media units in Leyton Grange

Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit, with the cables kept out of sight. Typical reasons to get in touch are nowhere good for speakers and a tangle of wires behind the TV, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A large share of the homes around Leyton Grange were built before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Houses of that age typically have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, and those alcoves are the natural home for TV and media units. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base, then cut neatly around the skirting and any picture rail or cornice.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought units often have a single cable gap, but cables usually still show somewhere. A built-in unit has routes planned through it. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What it is made from

Shelves

Shelves are sized for the equipment and speakers they carry, with room for cables behind.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to meet walls that are not straight, so there is no gap.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Built-in living-room furniture in Leyton Grange

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Leyton Grange were built before 1919 (about 63%) and since 2000 (about 16%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Leyton Grange include Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade II*), under half a mile east, and Walnut Tree House (Grade II*), under half a mile east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than half of the homes in the area around Leyton Grange (about 63%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. In houses of that age, the chimney breast often becomes the TV wall, with cupboards in the alcoves for set-top boxes and speakers.

Living in a block of flats near Leyton Midland Road station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near Riverley Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Close to Leyton Jubilee Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run.
  3. A written quote follows for the unit.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

What TV and media units cannot fix

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
