How we make TV and media units for Temple Mills
Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. For a living room in Temple Mills, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. We make TV and media units from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about set-top boxes stacked on a stand and standard units leaving gaps.
A large number of homes around Temple Mills date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer blocks. In a compact new-build room, a shallower run of TV and media units can add storage without crowding the space. Boxed-in pipes and service risers are common, and they can be built around rather than hidden badly.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Questions from Temple Mills
Do you cover homes near Stratford International station?
Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in Temple Mills?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. TV and media units are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?
The unit can be planned either way. For a wall-mounted TV, the layout works around the bracket position, and if it stands on the unit we size the top for it.
Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?
Media equipment runs warm and needs airflow. We design open backs, gaps or vents where it sits. Keep the vents clear once it’s in use.
Can you add sockets behind the TV?
Your electrician does that. It’s best done before the unit goes in.
Why bespoke in Temple Mills?
Screen sizes change, and a stand chosen for today’s set may not suit the next. We can leave room for a larger screen. In a compact new-build room, standard sizes rarely fit the walls exactly, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Why work with us in Temple Mills
- Scribed to uneven walls
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- Saturday work by prior arrangement
- Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.
Before and after fitting day
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
- Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
- Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
Vents and equipment shelves gather dust, so clean them now and then. It keeps air moving.
Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear as things change.
How fitting works for TV and media units
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
- We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, for you to look over.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in.
- Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear.
Preparing the room
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Ask for a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Advice
Boards, parts and paint
Plinths and scribe strips
A plinth lifts the unit and takes up an uneven floor. Its height can match the skirting board.
Shelves
Open shelves suit speakers and things you want on show.

TV and media units in Temple Mills: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Temple Mills were built since 2000 (about 84%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 8%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Temple Mills, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 84% of homes around Temple Mills were built since 2000, well above the figure for Newham as a whole, about 29%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.
Close to Mabley Green? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Gainsborough School, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Is it time for TV and media units?
Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. A built-in unit around the chimney breast lets it sit more quietly, rather than the focus of it.
Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:
- Space for a soundbar and speakers
- Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
- Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room
- Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
If your home is one of the older houses near St Eleutherius, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
