Wall beds for homes in Leyton Grange
Not every mattress suits every wall bed, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We’ll talk through what suits the bed at the measuring visit, so the mattress you choose fits. If you are living with room for a desk and a guest bed and storage built around a fold-down bed, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast normally sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. A large share of the homes around Leyton Grange date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Before and after fitting day
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
- Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
- Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
- Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched up. A spray finish wipes clean and stays smooth and even.
Check how the cabinet will get into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so let us know about narrow stairs or a small lift.
When is bespoke worth it?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Your questions about wall beds in Leyton Grange
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Leyton Grange?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
My house in Leyton Grange is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?
A wall bed is designed to be used regularly as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.
Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?
It depends on the wall and floor. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, so we check it during the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 1.7 miles south-west. Why bespoke in Leyton Grange?
Ready-made wall bed units are available and typically cost less, and they can work in a simple space. They’re made in standard sizes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. Ours is made to the room you have. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

From workshop to your room
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
