Loft storage in Southend: what you get

Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. Each piece is scribed to the dormer. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. At the design visit in Southend, we’ll look at what fits. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised and a loft room that still feels unfinished.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Southend, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille where there is a radiator underneath. Each space is measured and eaves cupboards are made to suit it.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit.

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

What prompts loft storage in Southend

Some people want to hide clutter in the eaves. Eaves cupboards keep them out of sight. The room stays calm and clear.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Needing storage in a loft office
  • Low eaves that nobody can use
  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • Standard furniture that will not go up the loft stairs

Kingswood House, about 2.5 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Will the quote be in writing?

What it is made from

Pull-out drawers

Drawers along the knee wall make a neat, low run of storage. The top can be a surface for books or lamps. We agree the layout at the design visit.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it is stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels, where the finish is most on show.

Loft storage for homes in Southend

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 55% of the housing in the area around Southend, with about 18% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Southend. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 55% of homes in the streets around Southend date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Many interwar houses have had their lofts converted, leaving sloping ceilings and eaves to use.

If you live in a flat close to Bellingham station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like The Fellowship Inn Public House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What we do not do

Not everything around loft storage is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
  • Approval for structural changes
  • Structural changes, like cutting into rafters or joists

Your questions about loft storage in Southend

Can you make loft storage for a home in Southend?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Southend is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Southend?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. A wardrobe made for the slope fits where a standard one cannot. Hanging goes where there is height, with shelves where it is low. It’s cut to fit the ceiling and walls exactly.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

How much does loft storage cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size of the room, the amount of storage and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
  • Choose a calm colour for the loft
  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer

Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. That keeps the drawers running smoothly. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. A quick sort every so often helps. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.
