TV and media units for homes in Stroud Green
A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That is work for your electrician. Ideally it’s done before the unit goes in. If your home has equipment with nowhere proper to go and equipment running hot in a closed cupboard, TV and media units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and TV and media units need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Stroud Green went up before 1919, so those details are worth looking at closely during the design visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Looking after your furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen
- Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
- Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
- Think about which things need to be seen by a remote
Once your equipment is in, check that it isn’t running hot. Don’t block the gaps and openings left for air with cables or clutter.
Heavy equipment is best kept low, with the weight spread across shelves.
When you need someone else
We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Painting the walls and ceiling
- Connecting and setting up your equipment
- New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?
TVs keep getting bigger, and a stand that suits today’s set may look small with the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind, so the unit lasts longer. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

TV and media units for homes in Stroud Green
Homes built before 1919 make up about 73% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Stroud Green, with about 9% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Part of Stroud Green is in the Stroud Green Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. The share of homes built before 1919 around Stroud Green, about 73%, is well above the figure for Haringey as a whole, about 54%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of TV and media units.
For an older house near Holy Trinity, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Hornsey Town Hall, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to St Aidan's Voluntary Controlled Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Common questions about TV and media units
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Stroud Green?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
I live in a flat in Stroud Green. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. TV and media units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?
Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, with open backs, gaps or openings. Each box should have its own space.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What it costs
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Spray painting or hand painting
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Before the design visit
These details help when you contact us:
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Where you live, with the postcode
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
How fitting works for TV and media units
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.
- You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, for you to look over.
- The unit is made at our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment.
Getting ready for fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
How to get a quote
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
