TV and media units in The Hyde

Everything starts with the screen. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you are likely to upgrade, with a margin so it is not a tight squeeze. Viewing height matters too: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. If your home has equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and a TV that looks out of place in the room, that is what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In an area like The Hyde, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for TV and media units. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned at the measuring visit, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

The Hyde homes and TV and media units

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around The Hyde were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 48%) and since 2000 (about 26%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. There is a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of The Hyde, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Your council can advise if you are unsure. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in The Hyde is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of the Holy Innocents, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Hendon station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

The Hyde is within the London Borough of Barnet, about 3 miles north-east of Finchley. From period terraces to newer flats in The Hyde, we measure the room as it is and design around it. What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Starting with a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Parking near your home
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Before the design visit

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it’s useful to send:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • How you want to use the space

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

What prompts TV and media units in The Hyde

The most common reason is a mess of wires. Cables run everywhere, from the screen to the boxes and the wall and nothing off the shelf hides them all. A built-in unit gives them a planned route.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room
  • Somewhere to keep games tidy
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers

Close to West Hendon Playing Fields? TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Is bespoke worth it?

Some closed off-the-shelf cabinets have little ventilation. Ventilation is designed in where equipment sits. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

FAQs: TV and media units in The Hyde

Does a conservation area in or near The Hyde affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live near Hendon station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Will the cables be hidden?

We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Access panels make future changes easy. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
