About our TV and media units in The Burroughs
Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes and the cable route behind it. If the TV stands on the unit instead, the top is sized and positioned for it. If you’re living with standard units leaving gaps and games, controllers and remotes everywhere, that is what TV and media units are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Around The Burroughs, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. That leaves room for TV and media units in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Living-room carpentry in The Burroughs: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 45% of the housing in the neighbourhood around The Burroughs, with about 20% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Hendon The Burroughs Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of The Burroughs. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in The Burroughs, let us know at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
For a flat near Hendon station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to St Joseph's Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live near Hendon Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.
The Burroughs is about 2 miles east of Finchley, within the London Borough of Barnet. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, The Burroughs included. The Burroughs is one of 41 places on our list for Barnet.
In NW4, NW9 and NW11, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. If your home is on a street such as Bell Lane, Eaton Road and Lodge Road, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for TV and media units. The Burroughs sits close to the A41. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Other places close to The Burroughs include Hendon (1 mile south-east), Colindale (1 mile west), Brent Cross (1 mile south-east), West Hendon (1 mile south-west) and The Hyde (1 mile south-west). Across the rest of Barnet, our area takes in Finchley (2 miles east), Barnet (4 miles north-east), Burnt Oak (2 miles north-west), East Finchley (2 miles east), Whetstone (4 miles north-east) and Edgware (3 miles north-west).

What we do not do
Not everything around TV and media units is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Connecting and setting up your equipment
- Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
- Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband

Your questions about TV and media units in The Burroughs
My home in The Burroughs is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in The Burroughs?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it is useful to be around at the end.
How long does it take to fit a TV unit?
It depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
How it is made
Plinths and scribe strips
In older houses, we typically scribe the sides and top. It’s what gives the unit its built-in look.
Shelves
Shelves are sized for the equipment and speakers they carry, with space around for air.

Is bespoke worth it?
Most stands have a cable hole or two at the back, but cables typically still show somewhere. We plan the cable routes into the design, with access panels for changes later. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.
Why choose us
- Scribed to uneven walls
- We work across all London boroughs
- Finished by spray or by hand
- A design visit, then a written quote
Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what to look for in a quote.
Pricing TV and media units in The Burroughs
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The overall size of the piece
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Getting in touch
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Examples of the look you are after
- Approximate measurements of the space
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
From workshop to your room
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
- We visit to measure and go through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
- You get a quote in writing covering the design, the materials and the finish.
- The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.
Preparing the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Getting a quote
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
