Living-room carpentry in Westbourne Green: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Westbourne Green, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 67%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 12%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Westbourne Green include Church of St Mary Magdalene (Grade I), less than half a mile north, and Catholic Apostolic Church and Church House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Purpose-built flats are home to about 59% of households in the neighbourhood around Westbourne Green, based on Census 2021. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

For an older house near St Mary Magdalene, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Close to Emslie Horniman's Pleasance? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. Living in a block of flats near London Paddington station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

About our TV and media units in Westbourne Green

If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit. If your home has games, controllers and remotes everywhere and a cabinet that traps heat, TV and media units made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Around Westbourne Green, a large share of homes date from before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Main rooms in houses like these typically have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, and those alcoves are the natural home for TV and media units. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Questions from Westbourne Green

Do you cover homes near London Paddington station?

Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Westbourne Green?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London, and Westbourne Green is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Is there room for a soundbar?

Speakers and soundbars get open shelves sized for them. Closing speakers behind a door muffles them, so we leave them open.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

Media equipment runs warm and needs airflow. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Keep the vents clear once it’s in use.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?

If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position and the cable route behind it. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket, which we look at during the design visit.

Pricing TV and media units in Westbourne Green

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How square the room is
  • The internal fittings
  • The number of doors and drawers

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • How you want to use the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

How it is made

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it’s good for shelves that carry equipment and speakers.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF has no grain to show through. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the unit.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Before we arrive

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Let us know about parking near your home

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
