Westbourne Green Fitted Wardrobes

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Westbourne Green starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms

Fitted wardrobes in Westbourne Green: what you get

The inside matters as much as the doors. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. People usually come to us about mismatched bedroom furniture and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Westbourne Green, lots of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit fitted wardrobes and other fitted storage well.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Empty the area where we will be working
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging

With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then. Don’t let shoes or bags sit in the track.

Close doors gently and don’t let them swing into furniture. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Bedroom storage in Westbourne Green

Homes built before 1919 make up about 67% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Westbourne Green, with about 12% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of Westbourne Green is within about a quarter of a mile of the Bayswater Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. The council can confirm if you are not sure. About 59% of households in the streets around Westbourne Green live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary Magdalene, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Kensington Palace, about 1 mile south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Westbourne Green is about 2 miles east of City of Westminster, part of the City of Westminster. From period terraces to newer flats in Westbourne Green, we measure the room as it is and design around it. We list Westbourne Green among 29 places we cover in Westminster.

We cover every part of the W2, W9 and W11 postcode area. Streets in the area include Salem Road, Talbot Road and Harrow Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted wardrobes. Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

For some, it is about a calmer room. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces, and everything has a place behind it.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall

If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary Magdalene, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

What to check before you book

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Why bespoke in Westbourne Green?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

From workshop to your room

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Advice

How we price fitted wardrobes

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How big the furniture is
  • The internal fittings

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Getting in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

My home in Westbourne Green is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Westbourne Green?

Yes, Westbourne Green is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Westminster and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.
