TV and Media Units in Soho

In Soho, we design TV and media units around the room you actually have. Your TV unit is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go
  • Bought furniture that does not suit the room
  • A screen at the wrong height

TV and media units for homes in Soho

Everything starts with the screen. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy, with room around it so it does not look squeezed. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. Most enquiries start with equipment with nowhere proper to go and speakers muffled behind doors, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a house from the Victorian or Edwardian years, the front room normally keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. That matters around Soho, as a large share of the homes there were built before 1919. The recesses either side take TV and media units scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting, so they sit as if they came with the house.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

From workshop to your room

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Arranging a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

When is bespoke worth it?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Living-room storage in Soho

Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the area around Soho, with about 21% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. 30 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Soho. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so the route from the van to your door is planned in advance, particularly for larger pieces.

For families living near Soho Parish CofE Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live in a flat close to Tottenham Court Road station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Doors and drawer fronts

Some equipment needs line of sight for its remote, so we may leave those shelves open.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the unit and takes up an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Common questions about TV and media units

My home in Soho is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Soho?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London, and Soho is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Can a TV unit hold speakers?

We plan open spaces for speakers and soundbars. Closing speakers behind a door muffles them, so we leave them open.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

That’s the aim, and it’s planned from the start. Access panels make future changes easy without taking the unit apart. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.

What prompts TV and media units in Soho

The most common reason is a mess of wires. Cables run everywhere, from the screen to the boxes and the wall. A built-in unit gives them a planned route.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A TV that looks out of place in the room
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room
  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go

Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.5 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

What we don’t do

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Connecting the TV signal or internet
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
