Materials and finishes
Doors and drawer fronts
Many remote controls need a clear view of the box, so we may leave those shelves open.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for panels, doors and the faces you see.
How we make TV and media units for St James's
In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books. Any chimney vent is kept clear. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a tangle of wires behind the TV and a screen at the wrong height.
In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around St James's, lots of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf TV units come in a few set colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

How fitting day works
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind.
- We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
- We send a quote in writing for the unit, ready for you to check.
- The unit is made at our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
- We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.
How to prepare
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Ask for a quote
It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
How we price TV and media units
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- The overall size of the piece
- How square the room is
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking and unloading on your street
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
What we need to know
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
For a quote for TV and media units in St James's, drop us a line using the contact form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.
Caring for painted furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Think about whether you will upgrade the screen
- Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
- Decide where you will sit, so the screen height suits it
- Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
Dust collects around equipment and vents, so clean them now and then. Clear vents keep equipment cooler.
Leave any new socket or wiring work to your electrician, and do not daisy-chain adaptors.

TV and media units for homes in St James's
About 54% of the homes in the area around St James's went up before 1919, and about 24% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of St James's, Historic England’s list includes The Haymarket Theatre (theatre Royal) (Grade I), less than half a mile east, and Institute of Directors (Grade I), less than half a mile south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. A van working in St James's will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Tell us what parking is near you during the design visit.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Marlborough House, about 0.3 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a family home near Soho Parish CofE Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live in a flat close to London Charing Cross station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Questions from St James's
Can you fit TV and media units to the uneven walls of an older house in St James's?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in St James's?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How much will my TV unit cost?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
How do I get a quote for TV and media units in St James's?
It is easiest to get in touch through our contact form and let us know about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.
