TV and media units in Covent Garden, Westminster

Planning TV and media units for a home in Covent Garden? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard

Ask about TV and media units in Covent Garden

Could you do it yourself?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

TV and media units for homes in Covent Garden

Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. For a living room in Covent Garden, we start with a design visit to measure and talk through what you use. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a big screen that dominates the wall and set-top boxes stacked on a stand.

In a house from the Victorian or Edwardian years, the front room normally keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. Around Covent Garden, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, that’s a common starting point. The recesses either side take TV and media units scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting, so they sit as if they came with the house.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought units come in the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

How fitting day works

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. You get a written quote covering the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Your questions about TV and media units in Covent Garden

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Covent Garden?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Covent Garden?

Yes. Covent Garden is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Westminster and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

What affects the price of TV and media units?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

What we do not do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Connecting the TV signal or internet
  • Plastering or decorating around the unit
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Built-in living-room furniture in Covent Garden

About 50% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Covent Garden went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. There are 836 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Covent Garden. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and TV and media units can be designed to work around them. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Covent Garden (about 50%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. In houses of that age, the chimney breast often becomes the TV wall, with cupboards in the alcoves for set-top boxes and speakers, with cable routes and ventilation planned in.

Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.4 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For an older house near Crown Court Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. Near listed buildings like Royal Opera House, under half a mile north of the centre of Covent Garden, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Covent Garden is within the City of Westminster, about 1 mile west of City of Westminster. Design visits and fitting in Covent Garden can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. We cover places right across Westminster, large and small.

Here we cover the W1F, W1D and W1T postcode area for TV and media units. Streets in the area include Duck Lane, Drury Lane and New Square, and we cover homes on all of them for TV and media units. Covent Garden sits close to the A301 and A400, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. We also cover the places around Covent Garden: Seven Dials (1 mile west), Aldwych (1 mile east), Adelphi (1 mile south), St Giles (1 mile north-west) and Clare Market (1 mile north-east). We also make TV and media units in nearby places such as Victoria (2 miles south-west), Paddington Green (2 miles west), Paddington (2 miles west), Connaught Village (2 miles west), Belgravia (2 miles south-west) and Lisson Grove (2 miles north-west).

What it costs

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How square the room is

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Where you live, with the postcode

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.
