How we make under-stairs storage for Camden Town

In a narrow hallway, the stairs may offer the only spare room for coats and shoes. We can make a coat section with a rail or hooks, shoe drawers and a small shelf for keys and post. Painted in a colour you choose, it reads as part of the house rather than a piece of furniture. It is a small change that makes a busy hallway feel ordered. If you’re living with a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter and coats and shoes piling up in the hall, under-stairs cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Walls in a block of flats can be concrete, brick, block or plasterboard, sometimes all in one flat. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Camden Town, we check each wall at the design visit before choosing fixings. On a stud wall, heavier pieces stand on the floor and are tied back.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, as it is strong and holds screws firmly. Drawer boxes and carcasses that take a load are often made from it. The layered edge can be left on show or painted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

With wet shoes and coats coming in, a moisture-resistant grade of MDF is a sensible choice. It gives the painted fronts a smooth base, and stays stable once it’s fitted.

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can
  • Note the size of anything tall you want to store
  • Plan decorating around the fitting

If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Masking tape can lift fresh paint, so it shouldn’t go on the new finish. If anything isn’t right, fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll talk it through.

Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. Overfilled drawers put strain on the runners, so it pays to sort them now and then. Deal with any wet shoes or umbrellas before they mark the base.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Camden Town?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Camden Town?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London, and Camden Town is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. It’s common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. We note them during the design visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. We do not move meters, so the storage works around their current position.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

What happens during the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

What we do not do

Not everything around under-stairs storage is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it during the design visit.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Camden Town

Homes built before 1919 make up about 40% of the housing in the area around Camden Town, with about 22% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 176 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Camden Town. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so the route from the van to your door is planned in advance.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Winfield House, about 1.2 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. If you live in a flat close to Camden Road station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For an older house near St Michael's Church, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

Camden Town is part of the London Borough of Camden, about 1 mile south-east of St Pancras. Anywhere in Camden Town, it works the same way: a design visit, a written quote, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. We cover places right across Camden, large and small.

Whether you live on a street such as Camden High Street, Greenland Road and Camden Road or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for under-stairs storage. How fitting works for under-stairs storage

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for each of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none.

  1. It starts with a few details from you about the space.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you’ll use the space.
  3. We send a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
