Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

My home in Clapham Junction is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

I live near Clapham Junction station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It’s made in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Clapham Junction

Good light helps you see colours and find things. Wiring for new lights is a job for your electrician. We can plan the units so there is space for the lighting you want and agree the details when we measure. Typical reasons to get in touch are moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and turning a box room into a dressing room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Older London houses often have sash windows, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Clapham Junction built before 1919, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard systems come in set widths and heights, so the space above and at the ends is often wasted. We can build right up to the ceiling and from wall to wall, which can add a lot of storage. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Why us?

  • Built around your room

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
