Flats, leases and landlords

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

About our under-stairs storage in Crofton Park

In many terraced houses, the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board sits under the stairs. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. Our designs keep a clear way to them, often behind their own door, so the space works hard without hiding anything that matters. If you’re not sure what’s under your stairs in Crofton Park, we’ll look when we visit. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Crofton Park are that old. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that is not. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What happens on fitting day

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store.
  2. At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted, because they must stay accessible.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you.

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

What we don’t do

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Crofton Park

I live near Crofton Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Crofton Park?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

The answer depends on your stairs and what you’ll keep there. Drawers make the low end useful, because you pull the back of the space to you. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made units are designed for shipping and quick assembly. Bespoke storage is designed for one space and built to suit it, with birch plywood drawer boxes that hold screws well and carry weight. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Fitted storage in Crofton Park

Homes built before 1919 make up about 57% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Crofton Park, with about 12% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. If your own home is a period one, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. Looking after your furniture

People planning under-stairs storage often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Look for meters, a fuse board or pipes before we visit
  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Plan decorating around the fitting
  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board

If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Tape on fresh paint can pull it off, so keep it away from the doors and drawers. Should you have a question about the storage, send us a few details through our contact form and we will help.

Sharp tools and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Store tools in a box or bag, not loose against the doors. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.
