Need under-stairs storage in Nunhead?

Is bespoke worth it?

Standard storage is built for a level floor and a square space, but the space under a staircase rarely offers either. Boxed units typically leave tricky gaps under the slope and dead space behind. Storage made for the space follows the angle of the stairs and uses its full depth. It is a bigger investment than a flat-pack unit, and the return is in the space it uses. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines, with panels and details to suit the house.

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

Why us?

  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Work across the whole of London

Under-stairs storage for homes in Nunhead

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. If you’re living with an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork, that’s what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

With a large share of homes around Nunhead built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Nunhead

Many people get in touch after digging through clutter to reach a meter or the fuse board. Good storage can keep these in clear reach behind their own door, and the rest of the space can still work hard.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall

If your children go to Ivydale Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Nunhead

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Nunhead were built before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 19 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Nunhead. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. That usually means a van in Nunhead needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

For an older house near Saint Antony with Saint Silas, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. If you live in a flat close to Nunhead station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Nunhead is about 1 mile west of East Dulwich, in the London Borough of Southwark. Wherever you are in Nunhead, it works the same way: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. We list Nunhead among 21 places we cover in Southwark.

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Let us know about parking during the design visit
  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Let us know if the hall is being decorated

Before we leave, we check every drawer and door with you. If there is a meter or fuse board, we make sure its door opens fully and the meter is easy to see. That way, nothing is left for you to sort out later.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. A loose handle is easy to tighten before it works its way out. If a door drops or a drawer starts to catch, use our contact form and tell us what’s happening.

Honest limits

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about the space under your stairs. It is useful to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed. Take your time to look through it.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes.

How to prepare

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Questions from Nunhead

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is Nunhead in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes. Nunhead is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Southwark and London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We will design around them.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?

Many designs use both. Drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space, and a cupboard at the tall end handles taller things. We’ll suggest a layout when we visit.
