Walk-in wardrobes in East Village

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Walk-in wardrobes in East Village

Many London homes have a small room that’s awkward as a bedroom. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. We plan the layout so you can stand, turn and see everything. Most enquiries start with more space for clothes and shoes and a dressing area in part of a bedroom; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Many newer homes have tall windows or full-height glazing in the bedroom, which leaves fewer walls for storage. That is worth planning for around East Village, where many homes date from 2000 onwards, so we make the most of the walls you have. Corner sections are planned so nothing is wasted.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What we do not do

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Electrical work in the room
  • Damp treatment or repairs

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and what you want to store.
  2. We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. You get a written quote for the design we’ve agreed, for you to read through.
  4. We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Flats, conversions and lettings

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.

East Village homes and walk-in wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around East Village were built since 2000 (about 68%) and before 1919 (about 12%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of East Village include The Theatre Royal (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. More than half of the homes in the streets around East Village (about 68%) were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.

The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 1.8 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If you live in a flat close to Stratford International station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live near Mabley Green, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

East Village is within the London Borough of Newham, about 2 miles south-east of Plaistow. We cover East Village as part of our work across Newham, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Our work takes in places right across Newham, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

In E15, E20 and E9, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. You will find streets here like Angel Lane, Major Road and Forbes Lane, and we cover homes on all of them for walk-in wardrobes. We also cover Temple Mills (1 mile north-west), Stratford (1 mile south-east), Maryland (1 mile south-east), Hackney Wick (1 mile south-west) and Holloway Down (1 mile north-east). Other parts of Newham we cover include Plaistow (2 miles south-east), Canning Town (3 miles south-east), Forest Gate (2 miles east), East Ham (3 miles south-east), Upton Park (2 miles south-east) and Greengate (2 miles south-east).

Tips worth knowing

People planning walk-in wardrobes often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Let air move through the space
  • Sort through your clothes before the design visit
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth

Store heavy things on lower shelves and spread the weight along the rails. It helps the shelves and rails stay straight.

Deal with any damp before the units go in. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, and ventilation inside the units helps.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in East Village

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in East Village?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

I live in a flat in East Village. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Walk-in wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?

That depends on how you like to use the space. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we’ll talk it through during the design visit.
